Before flowing into the Black Sea, the Danube River separates into three branches - Sulina, Chilia and Sfantu Gheorghe giving birth to a fabulous realm of thousands of square kilometers packed into a network of canals and puddles. All this space offers an image from the beginnings of the world, where land and water gently merge, creating sand banks, sand dunes, islets full of green, canals and mysterious swamps. Additionally, streams, quiet ponds and floating islets endlessly remold the landscape.

The Danube Delta hosts over 300 species of birds, 45 freshwater fish species and 1,200 species of plants and trees in its numerous lakes and marshes. Halfway between the North Pole and the equator, the delta is a major migration hub for thousands of birds. Europe's largest White Pelican and Dalmatian Pelican colonies are here, along with 60% of the world's population of Pygmy Cormorants. The main bird-watching season begins in April and lasts until late November.

The second in size and best preserved among Europe's deltas, the Danube Delta, is internationally recognized for its status in three ways: Biosphere Reservation, Ramsar Site (wet area of international importance) and UNESCO World Heritage site.

Exploring the wilderness of the Delta is a unique and thrilling experience for the naturalist, traveler, birdwatcher, angler or the simply curious.

TRAVEL PROGRAM

Day 1 - Mon. Bucharest - Sfantu Gheorghe

Arrival in Bucharest, capital of Romania. Transfer from the airport to Tulcea by road and then by boat to the fishing village of Sfantu Georghe in the Danube Delta. This picturesque village, close to a fine beach and within easy striking distance to one of the best bird-watching areas is a good base for exploring the delta. Relax with a welcoming drink - get to know one another and discuss thel program. Spend four nights at the Green Village Resort 4*, in the Danube Delta. (B, D)

Day 2 - Thu. Danube Delta

Discover the local culture by visiting the traditional fishing village of Sfantu Gheorghe, one of the best villages to sample traditional cooking. We then take a 40 minute hike to the beach, where the Danube majestically enters the Black Sea. There are no beach services and few people - just deserted stretches of fine sand. We enjoy an afternoon on the beach. (B, L, D)

Day 3 - Wed. Danube Delta

Today we venture into the heart of the natural reserve. A boat safari through the maze of channels, waterways and lakes will give you the opportunity to view the Delta's amazing bird and plant life. Afternoon at leisure to further explore the area or enjoy a variety of activities available at the hotel: beach football, table tennis, fishing, canoeing, bicycle rides etc. (B, L, D)

Day 4 - Thu. Danube Delta

Departure by boat to Sacalin Island. The Sacalin lakes and the sand banks, as well as the Black Sea coast are the maximum concentration sites of the ornithological fauna during the spring-autumn migration. The Sacalin Island is the most important nesting, pre-migration and migration area, an important wintering quarter, here nesting approximately 30 bird species. This is one of the oldest parts of the Delta and a strictly protected reserve. Afternoon at leisure. (B, D)

Day 5 - Fri. Danube Delta

After breakfast, return to Bucharest. Enjoy a sightseeing tour that will give you an overall impression of the most significant sights in Bucharest, including entrance to the Palace of Parliament. Overnight at the Athenee Palace Hilton hotel 5*. In the evening, you may decide to relax in the hotel's spa or to dine in the renowned Caru cu Bere Restaurant, Bucharest's oldest beer hall, dating from 1875, with Romanian folk music and dances. Day 6 - Sat. Bucharest

A last opportunity for city sight-seeing and shopping (your own arrangements). Transfer to the airport for your flight home. (B)
