The Holy Week in Romania

8 days Fully Escorted Tour

After a long feast and careful preparations, the most important event of the year is richly celebrated in Romania. Before Ortodox Easter, Romanian prepare delicious "pasca" (a kind of cheesecake) and paint eggs. Each one of these eggs, painstakingly painted with dozens of traditional motifs, in the predominant colours of red, yellow and black, may be regarded as a miniature work of art. At midnight, the people from Maramures dress in lavishly colourful folk costumes, gather in the church and take part into the Resurection service, a moment full of spirituality. Then, carrying lit candels, symbolizing Jesus Christ's Resurection, everybody makes for their homes to properly celebrate, together with the entire family.

Easter spent in Maramures is a unique experience. You have the rare oportunity to admire the display of colourful costumes, a natural part of every celebration, taste traditional home-cooked food and discover the local rituals. This is land where ancient traditions and customs still play an accepted part of everyday life and where people know how to enjoy them to the full. Tourist pensions offer all desired comfort, in a familiar and relaxing environment.

If you want to treat yourself to a holiday with a difference, try spending Easter in Maramures!

It is a unique experience to visit Maramures during one of its festivals, since these events are fascinating celebrations of Romanian folk traditions.
